What does Dignity mean to you?
Dignity to me is the ability to stand proud, even in the face of adversity.
What was your experience with your first period?
I got my first period when I was 13. I remember being really excited to tell my Mum! I also remember a feeling of relief - there was a lot of talk amongst my friends at the time about who had theirs and who didn’t and I remember being afraid I wouldn’t get mine until I was older and it would be “weird”.
What is the best thing for you about being a woman and menstruation?
It’s a good reminder that I can’t push my body or myself to breaking points. It reminds me that I’m not a machine, I am a flesh and blood human and I need to take care of myself!
What makes you feel empowered/comfortable in your skin?
It’s a funny one but my hair makes me feel empowered! I have very long dark curly hair, and I’ve been told before that curly hair isn’t professional looking and that I should “tame it”. Rocking natural curls to work and in professional settings makes me feel strong and empowered to be a woman and not be afraid to be a bit of a boss!
What would you like to say to anyone getting their first period?
Talk about it! Talk to your friends and your family and start a dialogue around what it means to you. You learn the best tips and tricks from others and being able to lean on people close to you is really important.
